DHNet Wireless Setup Checklist

Checklist for Getting Connected @Home
Items Needed To Proceed
  • Ethernet Cable
  • Gatorlink Username and Password
  • Internet Connection at home
We encourage you to follow the steps below at home before coming to UF Campus:

1. Make sure your computer complies with our minimum requirements (see below).

2. On the computer you will be bringing to the UF Campus, visit http://getonline.dhnet.ufl.edu.
  • NOTE: We recommend you use Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Google Chrome web browsers.
  • NOTE: The program will only configure your computer. You will be unable to connect until you arrive at UF.
 3. Using your Gatorlink username and password, follow the prompts to setup your computer for DHNet Wired Service.
  • NOTE: You will need to repeat the process to set up your computer for UF Wireless Service.
  • NOTE: Do not add “@ufl.edu” after your Gatorlink username.
 4. We recommend you bring an Ethernet cable, even if your residence hall has access to the UF Wireless Service.
  • NOTE: Residents are encouraged to purchase a CAT5e rated Ethernet cable before coming to campus.
  • NOTE: The UF Housing & Residence Education does not provide Ethernet cables to residents.
 5. Ensure your computer has fully up-to-date virus and malware protection. This is a requirement for both PCs and Macs.
  • FOR PCs:
  • FOR Macs: We recommend Avast Free Antivirus for Mac which satisfies the virus AND malware protection requirement.
6. Make sure your operating system is set to update automatically.
  • For PCs: Change Windows Update settings to “Install updates automatically” every day.
  • For Macs: Set Software Update to “Download updates automatically” on a daily schedule. You can find this in System Preferences under Software Update
  • NOTE: We also require Java, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, and Adobe Acrobat to be up-to-date.
  • If they become outdated, your access to the network will be restricted only to web pages to update the software.
  • To install the updates, you must remove the older, outdated, versions of these programs.
7. Stop any peer-to-peer (P2P) software from running automatically or uninstall completely.
  • NOTE: The use of P2P software, like Bit Torrent, is not permitted on our network. If you are found to be using these programs, your internet access will be restricted.
  • NOTE: You can find a list of P2P software here.
8. Change your Gatorlink password 48 hours before you arrive at UF Campus. Gatorlink passwords are required to be changed every 180 days and this will ensure that you will not need to change it until the end of Fall or Spring, depending on when you arrive to the UF Campus.
  • NOTE: Anytime you change your GatorLink Password, you will need to resynchronize your password here. After logging in, go to “My Account” and then “My GatorLink Account Status”.
9. If you are bringing an entertainment device (a gaming system, Blu-Ray player, television, etc.) with Internet capabilities, you are required to register it with our system. Visit the Entertainment Device Registration page for instructions on how to do this.
